Lies have long legs

Silvia Ferstl and Christoph Ackermann convincingly brought a lively and unusual cabaret program to the stage in the Bistro at MEKRA Lang. They not only excelled as performers, but also scored points with the high standard of their self-penned texts.

In the process, the two function simultaneously as lighting technicians, makeup artists, prop makers, scenery pushers, musicians and singers. The range of the two is truly impressive.

Beginning with Adam and Eve and continuing through the greats of world history - Pippin, the Pope, Napoleon and Galileo, to name just a few - the duo took us through the history of fibbing, with thoroughly sharp-tongued and profound excursions into philosophy and current politics, with church representatives not spared either.

In a wild ride through the everyday shenanigans in friendships, marriages, election campaigns, social media, to make an impression, to hide small transgressions, to reassure children (and voters?), the two expose in the best cabaret style the lies of the so-called little man as well as those of public figures.

Plagiarism, "alternative facts", baseless election promises, fact distortions in the age of postfacticism, imaginative product reviews, fanciful representations in the social media for maximum follower numbers are presented as furious as disarming and lead the audience to their own daily transgressions relentlessly and in the form of polished dialogues, rocking songs and sometimes even sacred sounds before the eyes.

The conclusion of the fast-paced, extremely entertaining evening can be summarized briefly: Lies have long legs, survive the greatest crises - whether in world politics or in married life and - after a detour into the world of unvarnished truth, which is also not convincing - this realization has something comforting, because:

Lies - well dosed - can alleviate pain, save marriages, cement friendships and give courage to face life. And so, at the end of this wonderful program, one can only join the performers in the song: hurray for the lie!

The hope remains that the talent of the two and the stunning program will also be noticed on larger cabaret stages.
